  1. The Decemberists - 'The Crane Wife'

Colin Meloy is the Decemberists' frontman. I always thought he sounded a bunch like Jeff Mangum. I think I never got into this band as much as a should've because a really lousy ex showed me the first song I'd ever heard by them.

'The Crane Wife' is not a core shaker. There are a few songs i'll take from it. I really like all the "Crane Wife" titled songs. (There are two)

My favourite song by far is the song "Shankill Butchers". It plays a little like Death Cab's "I Will Follow You into the Dark," but a much more delicate and less comforting.

I really like Meloy's voice, it's very eerie and hollow, but really very strong.

  2. Nada Surf - 'Let Go'

I started using a fake ID when I was 17. My tact was to buy tickets only at the door, so if I got rejected for holding a fake ID then I wouldn't swallow the cost of ticket.

Nada Surf was the downfall of this approach.

I had finally reached the front of a line of people to get into Lee's and I handed the bouncer my ID. He looked at me very hard and said, I don't know... He passed my ID to another guy and he pondered for a bit. They eventually reluctantly agreed to let me go in. Just as they cleared the way for me, they asked if I had a ticket. Turns out the show was sold out.

Fortunately, I had the opportunity to see Nada Surf for free at Sonic Boom the day before my twentieth birthday.

Nada Surf write the perfect pop tunes. I love that they can make an absolutely ridiculous mess of words like the tune "Fruit Fly" and make it into a serious song. Again, the perfect pop album.

  3. M. Ward - 'Transistor Radio'

Some of M. Ward's best work is in his instrumental bits. He's such an incredible guitar player.

My favourite song off of this album is, and has always been "One Life Away."
