Conor Oberst (1:17:30):
"I don't know if you all read the newspaper or whatever, or watch the television, but today, on this very day we started our third war as a country. It's kind of incredible, it doesn't even matter, no one even bothers. But today, on this very day, they dropped bombs from planes. They landed on houses where people sleep and people died. That's exactly what happened today, where actually four wars, Iraq, Pakistan, Lybia, Afghanistan, anything with a stan, we just blow it up. I think it's worth noting that today we murdered children as a country. Sorry to bring it down like that, but that's what's actually happening."
With some harsh words, Oberst gave a few words to introduce "Old Soul Song."
I love that line "Yeah they went wild..." bit in this song. It's so delicate, but grows into something absolutely gushing.
You should listen to this stellar set - it was recorded live at South By Southwest 2011 by NPR.
You must listen to his live version of "Lua" in this recording (1:28:14). The trumpet just sounds absolutely lovely in conjunction with his guitar bits.
